Breaking Ground
Breaking Ground, the Ballymun Regeneration Limited per cent for art commissions programme was launched in Ballymun in February 2002. Over the life of the regeneration programme, which is expected to continue until 2012, a wide and diverse range of art has been unfolding in Ballymun.
Breaking Ground seeks to questions the legitimacy and value of commissioning contemporary art practice, through the per cent for art fund, in a context such as Ballymun. Working with over thirty five artists, and hundreds of local people, over the past five years, Breaking Ground is conscious of the mark being made by the commissioning programme and reflects this critical awareness in the projects curated. From the outset Breaking Ground acknowledges the work already being done in the community by local artists and organisations involved in or using the arts, while actively engaging new audiences, collaborations and partners.
Breaking Ground is organising a major international conference in Spring 2008, Art in the Life World, which will seek to investigate the autonomy of the artist. A parallel series of exhibitions across Dublin city will feature a diverse range or artists and practices.
