Hotel Ballymun

Furniture

Seamus Nolan worked with Irish design duo Sticks and RCA graduate Jonathan Legge to run a series of workshops for 2 months prior to the opening of Hotel Ballymun, to create unique furniture for the hotel. The furniture was made from existing furniture and objects left behind by residents from the flats in the building, after they moved on to new homes as part of the regeneration of the area.

Participants in the workshops were all from the Ballymun area and included Helen Nic Giolla Rua, Noreen Lynch, Cecilia Moore, Sebastao Kamalandua, Nicola Coyle, Michelle Nolan, Liam McCotter, John Byrne, John Pakker, Rachel Starrs, Peter McNamara, Maurice Caprice and Michael Lowndes who created some unique and fascinating one-off pieces of furniture for the hotel. Pieces were placed throughout the rooms, making each room very different in atmosphere and style.

At the end of the project, due to the levels of interest in the individual pieces of furniture, an auction of the pieces was held. Funds generated by the auction along with the donations made by Hotel guests, will fund an arts bursary for people in Ballymun.
